Brand story
The Mongrel Socks brand was established by Laurie and Helen, a couple of proud Tasmanians in the year 2000. They set up a stall at the local Salamanca markets and soon started selling beautiful pure wool Tasmanian made on antique sock machines. They were a hit. All was ticking along nicely, until the local sock manufacturer, went out of business, which led to Laurie & Helen buying the old sock machines, and set about learning how to knit the socks themselves. The machines were temperamental, and at times a real “Mongrel” to operate, but with much patience and persistence they mastered the art of knitting socks. Today Mongrel Socks is run by another Tasmanian couple, Paul and Mylou, who took over the reins in 2019. The Tasmanian wool is sourced from farmers who are dedicated to the best animal welfare practices. Mongrel socks have secured a long term supply and are busily knitting with certified Tasmanian grown and non-mulesed Pure Merino Wool for use in all their pure wool products. Happy sheep, happy feet!
