Struggling with mould?

  1. Combine 500ml of water with a 1/8 tsp clove oil in a spray bottle, screw on the lid, and shake to combine. Don't make it any stronger than that as it won't work better and may damage surfaces.
  2. Spray lightly over the affected area and leave for 24 hours. Clove oil will kill the mould spores.
  3. After 24 hours, wipe the area using a cloth dipped into 4:1 mix of white vinegar and water. Doing this will remove the dead spores and also kill any that are remaining (vinegar causes mould to overeat and die).
  4. Any remaining discolouration on surfaces should be able to be removed with Oxygen Bleach.

Tips:

Clove bud oil is stronger than clove leaf oil.

Mould needs organic matter like dead skin cells to thrive, so it's important to keep up with regular vacuuming and cleaning.

Mould in tile grout or silicone is almost impossible to remove because the mould's hyphae or roots bury deep into it. In this situation you may have to re-silicone or re-grout the area.

Where to buy clove oil?

Whether you buy clove oil at the supermarket such as Coles or Woolworths, buy clove oil at a chemist such as Chemist Warehouse or Priceline, or at your Bunnings near you, be sure to check that it is 100% pure clove bud oil (clove bud is most effective), not diluted, and that it is made in Australia. Did you know you can remove mould naturally and keep it away using clove oil?

Using a quality pure 100% clove essential oil, bi-carb and vinegar you can avoid harsh chemicals and chlorine bleach, and keep your space mould free.

Mould removal paste: Add a couple of drops of clove oil to a paste of bicarb and vinegar and scrub grout with a toothbrush every few months (source: Spotless).

What is the difference between clove bud and clove leaf essential oil?

Both come from the same plant and both are composed of eugenol, eugenyl acetate, and caryophyllene. Clove bud oil has much higher levels of eugenol (up to 90% of the oil), which is thought to be responsible for its stronger aroma and more potent beneficial properties. As clove bud essential oil is more potent, it must be diluted before use.
