Hatched from a want to create a waste free future, Pela believe that technology exists to make everyday products without everyday waste. Pela was inspired by the Spanish word that can mean peel or to peel. Their thought process was, what if you could guard your "Apple" with a natural "peel" and hence Pela was born! Pela's co-founder, Jeremy Lang, created the proprietary blend of starch-based elastomer with flax shive that has now created thousands of phone cases all over the world. Flax shive is an annually renewable byproduct of the flax oil seed harvest in Canada and is typically burned down at the end of each season. Using this “waste” by product gives Pela cases added strength and natural shock absorption and provides local farmers with another source of revenue. Your Pela phone case will protect your tech and reduce waste on our planet.

Everything you need to know about Pela phone cases Australia:

Origins:
Jeremy Lang started Pela after his son dug up some plastic on a Hawaiian beach. With such a stark example of plastic pollution being thrown in his face, Jeremy started to think about ways he could help to reduce the amount of plastics in the world. Jeremy realised a common source of plastic was in phone cases. Almost everyone with a smartphone uses a case, to protect their (usually) expensive investment. With phones being such a high-use item, the common plastic phone case is not only a source of waste, but a potential source of toxins that comes into contact with your hands all the time. Jeremy created the Pela case. Not only was this biodegradable case better for the environment, it was free of BPA, lead, cadmium and phthalates, chemicals that can be found in typical plastic phone cases.

Sizes:
Pela make cases to fit a variety of phone models. With everything from old iPhone & Android models to the newest of the new, Pela is bound to have a case that fits your phone.

Materials:
Pela uses only sustainable materials in the construction of their cases. This ensures that they are not depleting the earth of any precious resources and instead using materials that will replenish. This inspiration was drawn from plants, and it is plants that go into the construction of a Pelacase. Additionally, the use of raw materials that have been derived from plants & microorganisms reduces the dependence on fossil based resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. This combination of materials is compostable, and will break down into CO2, water and biomass within months.

Manufacturing:
To accompany their sustainable material choices, Pela have developed a sustainable and fair manufacturing process. Over 80% of Pela phone cases are manufactured in British Columbia, Canada, at a facility called the Kelowna Sustainability Studio. Here they can regrind old Pela cases to extract the materials as well as manufacture and engrave new cases. Pela also has a manufacturing partner in South China. Here they make some of the cases, including AirPod cases, watch straps and eyewear. This facility has been running since the year 2000 and currently employs about 800 people.

Sustainability:
When it comes to sustainability, Pela do not just talk the talk. They have produced extensive reports regarding their carbon footprint, which can be viewed on their website. They consider all possible sources of greenhouse emissions, including (but not limited to) upstream and downstream shipping, manufacturing processes and capital purchases. Pela then uses this calculated carbon footprint to offset their emissions with the purchase of carbon credits. With the combination of their sustainable approaches to manufacturing and their purchasing of carbon credits, Pela have managed to manufacture, sell and ship their phone cases to Australia with the smallest possible impact on the environment.
